Position Summary

The LGBT Network is seeking a full-time Communications Director to plan, coordinate and execute an on-going comprehensive communications strategy that includes digital media, print and website. The Communications Director will be responsible for content creation, copy writing, editing, and public and media relations in order to raise awareness, engage partners and increase knowledge of and support for the organization. The Communications Director is based out of the Woodbury Center and reports to the President & Chief Executive Officer.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Director is responsible for:

  • Building LGBT Network brand through strategic and consistent messaging to internal and external audiences highlighting core messaging and mission; ensures brand continuity through all materials
  • Creating, managing and developing marketing materials, digital, social media, email marketing and website content to engage target audiences and lead to measurable action
  • Writing and editing talking points, letters to the editor, op-eds, presentations, fact sheets, press kit materials, newsletters and other supporting material, as needed
  • Developing & maintaining effective working relationships with external media entities, ensuring maximum visibility of the Network in local, state and regional media outlets
  • Working closely with outside public relations firm
  • Conceptual writing and editing with a strong command of storytelling
  • Distilling complex ideas into simple, approachable language for a variety of audiences and channels
  • Planning and managing event communications including strategy, message, visuals, materials, media outreach, video, photography and social media
  • Working closely with the CEO to position the organization correctly in the external and internal communities; finds opportunities to set up CEO as a thought leader and prepares remarks for important events
  • Other duties assigned as needed

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism or related field
  • Five-plus years of related experience or a combination of education and experience
  • Experience creating content for and managing digital and media campaigns required
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to plan and direct projects from inception to completion, working under tight deadlines with conflicting priorities
  • Experience with fundraising communication
  • Experience in Associated Press style writing preferred
  • Knowledge of nonprofit storytelling
  • Commitment to and knowledge of the LGBT community
  • Ability to articulate the LGBT Network’s mission
  • Strong proficiency with computer skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel as well as requisite publishing and media tools

Other Requirements 

  • Flexible work schedule a must, as this position requires afternoon to early evening hours and weekends
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver license as this position will require frequent travel to Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties
  • Sensitivity, understanding and the ability to effectively interact with individuals, both internal and external, from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and phone skills and ability to work with a wide range of people
  • Strong public speaking and networking skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills for handling multiple tasks at once
  • Must have strong attention to detail 

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefit package
