Chief of Staff/Legislative Director
The Chief of Staff is the leader of Assemblymember Gabriella Romero's team, and ensures that the office's daily and long-term operations are working efficiently and in line with the Assemblymember's priorities. The Chief is the primary nexus between the office, government agencies, elected officials, and community leaders. The Chief of Staff is also charged with implementing the Assemblymember's legislative agenda. A strong candidate for Chief of Staff should have management and leadership experience.
The Chief of Staff has three direct reports, including the District Director, Communications Director, and Community Liaison.
Responsibilities of the Chief of Staff include:
- Manages office staff while setting the direction/tone and obtaining regular reports of staff members to monitor progress of the office's goals
- Facilitates consistent and transparent communication with staff around decisions and decision-making roles
- Manages relationships with stakeholders including other elected officials, state agencies, community-based organizations, neighborhood associations, advocates, labor unions, and others
- Facilitates an office culture of respect and open communication; mediates and resolves conflict with the staff
- Helps craft the policy agenda for the Assemblymember, analyzes legislation, provides policy consultation in key areas of interest, and prepares briefings on key legislative items
- Manages the time and priorities of the Assemblymember at a high level
- Ensures appropriate staffing is delegated for the Assemblymember at all times including on weekends and evenings
- Oversees the office's internal and external communications in consultation with the Communications Director
- Works flexible hours including events and weekends
Key abilities and experience:
- Excellent time management skills with an eye towards efficiency and organization; works under tight deadlines and can prioritize multiple projects and tasks
- Demonstrated commitment to organizing in working class communities and building real power in Albany, Guilderland, and New Scotland and the greater New York State
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
The Most Important:
- Understands the legislative process, as well as the structure and policies of the New York State Legislature, and is effective at coalition building in a legislative context
- Must have experience in the NYS legislature
- Must live in the 109th Assembly District by December 2026
Salary and Benefits:
$75,000-$85,000 per year for a full-time, overtime exempt position. This position offers health, vision + dental insurance, a retirement plan, and an opt-in life insurance plan. This position comes with sick days, vacation days, persona time, as well as state holidays. During non-session (June-December) we have a flexible work from home policy.
