Community Advocate
Core duties include constituent services, public policy research, event coordination, project organizing and management, and representing the Assemblymember in the Brooklyn district.
Responsibilities include:
- Help constituents with issues related to social services, transportation, the environment, and quality of life concerns.
- Conduct community organizing and coalition building in some of the Assemblymember’s priority policy and project areas such as mental health, healthcare, climate change, housing, transit or education.
- Liaise with community members, advocates, elected officials offices, and government agencies on continuous projects in the district such as the Gowanus environmental cleanup and other transit, housing, and infrastructure projects.
- The candidate will attend community meetings, public events, and represent the Assemblymember to the public.
- Coordinate community events, draft letters and other correspondence, and assist with office administration.
Some weeknight & occasional weekend work (credited time is provided).
Position reports to the Chief of Staff.
Qualifications:
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills.
- The candidate must be interested in working with the public, helping people solve their problems, and organizing for change.
- Background in social work (or a related field) or experience in a government office preferred.
- Ability to work on projects both independently and to work collaboratively in a small team environment.
- Highly self-motivated; able to set and meet deadlines.
- Interest in working for a progressive elected official. Interest in community issues, politics, and government.
- The ideal candidate is able to adapt quickly to emerging issues and actively pitches in to help achieve the team's goals.
- Excellent listening skills and attention to detail.
- Experience managing multiple projects at once and navigating complex situations.
- Eager to contribute to a supportive work environment.
