Department of Homeless Services leads a 24/7/365 Street Homelessness Solutions - Joint Command Center (JCC) that conducts interagency rapid outreach deployment from a central location using precision mapping, client information, and rapid response to incoming notifications. The JCC’s functions include street and subway level canvasses and engagements with homeless individuals. This initiative partners existing homeless response and prevention programs with a series of new initiatives that have been designed to better identify, engage, and transition homeless New Yorkers to appropriate services and, ultimately, permanent housing.
The Department of Homeless Services is recruiting (33) thirty-three temporary Community Assistants, for a 9-month initiative, reporting to the Joint Command Center, to function as a Peer Coordinator, who will:
- Provide information pertaining to available DHS and community service to potential homeless individuals within subway locations and above ground areas. Answers questions, conveys information.
- Make observations and collect information from potential homeless individuals. Submit referrals for engagement to Field Associates and Crisis Coordinators. Escort clients when necessary.
- Provide clerical support services such as filing, record keeping, and documenting. Update client records.
- Assist in preparing standard reports.
- Laisse with community.
Minimum Qual Requirements
- There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. However, the ability to understand and carry out simple instructions is required.
- Candidates must be able to understand and be understood in English.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
Salary Range:
- $15.57 -$17.91 (Hourly)
